Expanding the Z Lineage

Following the monumental global success of the original 240Z, Datsun updated its halo sports car for the 1974 model year with the introduction of the 260Z. Designed to meet increasingly stringent US emissions regulations and safety standards, the engine was bored out to 2.6 liters. Alongside the traditional two-seat fastback coupe, Datsun also introduced a stretched 2+2 version featuring a longer wheelbase and rear seats to appeal to a broader family-oriented market.

The car retained the gorgeous, timeless silhouette penned by Yoshihiko Matsuo, characterized by its long hood, cab-back stance, and sleek fastback roofline, ensuring it remained one of the best-looking sports cars on the road.

Mechanical Adjustments

The primary mechanical change for the 260Z was its enlarged L26 inline-six engine. Although the transition to early Hitachi flat-top carburetors initially hampered throttle response and peak output in American markets due to lean emissions tuning, the engine remained an exceptionally smooth, robust, and easily tunable powerplant.
