F50

Formula 1 for the Road

Launched to celebrate Ferrari’s 50th anniversary (though arriving a couple of years early), the F50 took a radically different path than its turbocharged F40 predecessor. Instead of forced induction, the F50 used a derivative of Ferrari’s 1990 3.5-liter F1 engine, bored out to 4.7 liters. Even more extreme was its chassis construction: the V12 engine was mounted as a stressed structural member directly to the carbon-fiber tub, meaning the rear suspension bolted right to the engine casing—just like a true grand prix racer.

Pininfarina styled the car with smooth, muscular lines, featuring a removable hardtop that allowed drivers to experience the unfiltered soundtrack of the V12 in the open air.

Screaming V12 Acoustics

The 4.7-liter naturally aspirated Tipo F120B V12 is an absolute masterpiece, spinning up to a spine-tingling 8,500 RPM redline while producing 514 horsepower. Power is routed through a traditional 6-speed manual gated shifter with a bare metal gate, offering an intimate mechanical connection between man and machine.

  • Chassis Design: Engine bolted directly as a structural load-bearing member
  • Bodywork: Carbon-fiber composite tub with removable hardtop roof
  • Absences: No power steering, no power brakes, and no ABS for pure feedback

Fun Fact: To test the F50’s high-speed chassis stability before production, Ferrari used former F1 world champion Niki Lauda to shake down early prototypes at Fiorano.

Unfiltered Engagement

Driving the F50 is a loud, vibrating, visceral experience. Because the rear suspension is bolted straight to the engine, every ripple of the tarmac is transmitted directly into the cabin. The throttle response of the naturally aspirated V12 is instantaneous, and as the revs climb past 6,000 RPM, it emits an intoxicating Formula 1 shriek that is unmatched by almost any other road car.

Without electronic nannies, managing the rear tires through sweeping bends requires absolute precision and driver respect.

“The F50 is the closest you can ever get to driving a legitimate Formula 1 car on public roads.”
