F40

Enzo’s Swan Song

Commissioned by Enzo Ferrari as his final parting gift to the automotive world, the F40 was built with a singular, uncompromising directive: to be a pure, unadulterated racing car for the road. Stripped of any creature comforts, carpets, or sound deadening, its body panels were crafted from ultra-thin carbon-kevlar, leaving the green weave visibly exposed beneath the iconic Rosso Corsa paintwork. It was raw, brutal, and utterly focused on speed.

Pininfarina’s aerodynamic design featured a massive fixed rear wing, NACA ducts, and a low-slung nose that prioritized downforce above all else. The F40 looked like a Le Mans prototype that had accidentally escaped onto public streets.

Twin-Turbo Fury

Mounted directly behind the cockpit is a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine equipped with twin IHI turbochargers. Producing 471 horsepower, the power delivery is infamous for its ferocious turbo lag followed by an explosive wall of boost that hits hard in the mid-range. Paired with a dog-leg 5-speed manual transmission, it demanded absolute reverence from anyone behind the wheel.

  • Body Construction: Carbon fiber and Kevlar composite panels
  • Weight Saving: Sliding plastic side windows and pull-strap door latches
  • Absences: No anti-lock brakes, no power steering, and no electronic aids
!

Fun Fact: The paint on the F40 was applied so thinly to save weight that the carbon-fiber weave pattern is visibly ghosted through the red paint on every authentic car.

The Purist Experience

Driving an F40 is an intense, visceral event. The cabin is hot, noisy, and devoid of luxury, vibrating with the mechanical chatter of the transaxle and the distinct whistle and hiss of the turbo wastegates. When the turbos spool up at 4,000 RPM, the car surges forward with terrifying acceleration, demanding lightning-fast reflexes to keep the rear tires tracking straight.

There are no electronic safety nets to rescue a driver’s mistake; the F40 relies entirely on mechanical grip, communication, and driver skill.

“The F40 is automotive dynamite. It is raw, terrifying, and the most engaging supercar ever to turn a wheel.”
